The President of Georgetown University is the chief executive officer of the University. He is an ex officio member of both the Board of Directors and the Corporation.[1] The President is elected by the Board of Directors to manage the day-to-day operations of the University.
With the concurrence of the Board, he is empowered to appoint the Provost, Secretary, Treasurer, and other University officials, including the deans of the subsidiary schools.[1] He is also responsible for maintaining an adequate fundraising campaign in order to support the University's finances. In addition to his administrative duties, the President often retains his role as an academic professor and teaches courses to students.
Founder John Carroll was never president, though clearly held great influence in the school's early years. Georgetown has had forty-one presidents, though seven served two terms. John J. DeGioia is the first ever lay president of the school, and only the forth non-Jesuit.[2]
